BIBA President Speaks Aboard the LÉ Samuel Beckett

More than 2,500 people flocked to the Charlestown Navy Yard this weekend to visit and tour the Samuel Beckett. The Irish Naval Service patrol vessel docked Thursday, October 3rd and stayed in Boston until this past Monday, accompanied by events, speeches and celebrations.

BIBA’s President, Laura Hamilton, spoke aboard the ship during the Irish Consul General Laoise Moore’s First Friday event, following speeches by EU Ambassador, Stavros Lambrinidis, and Kildare delegation leader, Allan Shine, of the Kildare Chamber of Commerce. Hamilton briefed the crowd on BIBA’s upcoming trade mission to Ireland in November.

She announced the trip would kick off in Belfast, alongside Boston Mayor Marty Walsh who will be leading the celebration of the Boston - Belfast Sister City relationship. The weekend includes a range of business events as well as the Friendship Four Ice Hockey Tournament (featuring Northeastern, UNH, Colgate and Princeton). From there, they’ll be traveling through Derry, Donegal, Dublin and Cork to connect with business leaders and elected officials across the island of Ireland.

“It was an honor to be invited to speak onboard the Samuel Beckett and share the exciting developments at BIBA. We’re so thrilled to be returning to Ireland for our first trade mission in ten years. Delegations from Ireland often visit us and this is our way of reciprocating and showing our commitment to our mutual business interests,” says Hamilton.

Following Friday’s events, more tours and celebrations ensued over the weekend. During a speech Saturday evening, Mayor Marty Walsh declared October 6th Samuel Beckett day in the City of Boston to honor the ship’s humanitarian contributions.
